Modelling and simulation of soil-water interaction for dredging applications using the Material Point Method (MPM)

This is the website of the MPM-DREDGE project (Modelling and simulation of soil-water interaction for dredging applications using the Material Point Method) within the framework of Marie Curie IAPP (Industry Academia Partnership and Pathways) dealing with the numerical simulation of large deformations and the modelling of soil-water interaction. The MPM-DREDGE project connects two full participants with four supporting partners in a consortium which engages key private stakeholders in the dredging sector.

MPM-DREDGE brings some of the world’s finest researchers together to provide high quality training and research. The overarching aim of the MPM-DREDGE project is to provide high quality training to a group of young researchers, contributing to the development of a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers able to work in the challenging field of advanced computational modelling of large deformations and soil-water interaction.

MPM-DREDGE is an Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) project funded from the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) of the European Commission under grant agreement PIAP-GA-2012-324522 during 2013-2017.

The Swiss National Science Foundation has awarded Mr James Fern a 13-months Doc'Mobility scholarship (grant no. P1SKP2 158621) to carry out MPM simulations of slope failures in unsaturated conditions at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and in partnership with the MPM Research Community.


Project summary

The aim of the MPM-DREDGE project is to develop, validate and demonstrate a numerical tool for the modelling and simulation of dredging applications. It is aimed to solve the numerical issues associated with large deformations and fluid pressures that occur in the interaction between soils and fluids. This effort will result in a joint computer code that combines earlier pioneering work of the participants (University of Cambridge and Deltares) in the field of soil–fluid interaction.

During the MPM-DREDGE project new methodologies will be developed, the advanced code will be intensively validated using benchmark problems and will demonstrated for dredging applications. The main focus will be on the modelling of soil–fluid interaction problems related to the following three dredging applications:

  • Dropping of geocontainers with interaction between pore water and open water;
  • Liquefaction and marine slope slides including the dredging of soils;
  • Erosion and scour around offshore and near-shore structures.

A major impact of the new software and of the joint effort of the participants through a collaboration in the MPM-DREDGE project is expected as expressed by the dredging industry supporting the proposed project (i.e. Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors, Royal Boskalis Westminster, Dredging International and Jan de Nul).
