Institute of Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Management

With the appointment of Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Grabe as a professor in 1998 the section 'Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Management' was founded and renamed in 'Institute for Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Management' in 2006. Research and education are focused on Geotechnical Engineering in general and Marine Geotechnics in partuicular. The main field of research activities is the optimization of geotechnical techniques and constructions by means of mathematical optimization and numerical simulation.

Marc Stapelfeldt earned his M. Sc. degree in civil engineering from TUHH in 2014. During his time as a graduate student he already gathered experiences while working at an engineering firm that is involved in offshore projects all over the globe. After graduating – convinced to make a career in the industry – he started his first full time position at one of Hamburg’s most traditional geotechnical engineering firms. A little more than half a year into his new position, he published his first paper at the OMAE 2015. Marc decided to find a position to earn his Ph. D. during this conference. He returned to TUHH the year after and started working on a research project on the installation and the vertical load bearing behavior of suction caisson foundations for offshore wind turbines. In 2017 he joined the Anura3D MPM Research Community with the goal to gain novel insights into the suction installation process of caisson foundations through the utilization of the material point method.
